Human Growth and Development

In this, our second unit, we examine one of the fundamental questions facing psychology:  How do nature and nurture interact to help determine who we are?  We also examine the maturation process of humans, including aspects relating to physical, intellectual, social, and moral maturity.

This episode of This American Life explores the stories of two girls who were switched at birth, and makes clear some of the markers of nature and nurture.

THe Role of Culture

How does where we are determine who we are?  What role does culture and socialization have on development?  Does it matter what family we are raised by?  This section talks about the "nurture" part of nature v. nurture.

Physical Development

From the fertilization of an egg to decline at the end of life, how does the human body develop across the life span?
